What’s the best part of working in the music industry? For us, it’s not just grooving to the beats of the #PlasticFreeParty—it’s building meaningful connections with the trailblazers shaping this space.
That’s why we are so inspired by the Music Cities Awards, the leading global platform celebrating individuals and organizations harnessing the transformative power of music to uplift their communities.
Marking five years of groundbreaking innovation, our Co-Founder Camille Guitteau had the honor of attending the 5th annual Music Cities Convention, and we’re thrilled to share her key takeaways from this incredible event.
Money matters in the music industry
One of the most encouraging insights from the convention was the idea that money is crucial. As expectations of artists continually evolve, giving creators an understanding of digital processes is vital to creating music in a way that's sustainable for their careers and the planet. Equipping artists with the knowledge of intellectual property, AI tools, royalties and how money flows from the start, is key to evolving the industry towards a better financial structure.

Music is the beating heart of urban cultures
Spend time in any city and you’ll feel where the culture lies: in its music scene. But behind the pulse of DJ sets and conventions like this one, navigating the space between day and night is no easy feat. It requires double the stakes, skill sets, networks, and strategic planning - placing a lot of work on the shoulders of small nonprofits, event organisers and artist management teams. Support for these individuals is essential to effectively move through both realms.

Artists have the power to inspire change
Music nonprofits rely on artists and public figures to champion the cause. With the support of diverse teams to advise on legal, HR and administrative matters, artist-led nonprofits should never underestimate the power they hold to bring attention to a topic.
In Bye Bye Plastic's case, that's raising funds for a compelling new music model that all of us can dance to. Learn more about our work here. 🎶

The best collaborations are about more than just music
The more we talk to others in our industry, the more we appreciate how deeply our music ecosystem is interconnected. The key to long-term success in the music business lies in embracing diverse and creative cross-sector collaborations: think music x tourism, music x sustainability, and music x climate.
Austin is one city already leading the charge in this kind of innovation. The city uses a portion of its tourism tax to support local music venues, ensuring the heartbeat of its music scene stays strong.
You’ll always find Bye Bye Plastic fam along the way…😉
Something that never fails to amaze us? Stumbling upon our family of like-minded eco-conscious music lovers and artists wherever we go.
On Monday night, we had the pleasure of vibing to an incredible set by the talented French/Dutch siblings duo Parallelle, at The Hidden Valley. The chance to reconnect with this dynamic pair was the perfect reminder of our ultimate ambition: to make the industry a space where we can dance plastic-free.
And we may have one bonus takeaway…
We’re super proud and humbled to announce that we WON the Music Cities Award for…Best Initiative Using Music to Support Environmental Sustainability!
This award is a reflection not only of Bye Bye Plastic’s relentless work in the name of the #PlasticFreeParty…but an appetite for change in the music industry which we couldn’t have done without your support ✊
And one final sprinkle of December magic? We also won the International Music Managers Forum Award for Artist Activism!
"These moments remind us why we’re relentless in this mission: not for the prizes, but to inspire and mobilize evermore incredible talents to help protect our only dancefloor—the planet. 🌍💃 "
Camille Guitteau, Co-Founder of Bye Bye Plastic Foundation
Let’s just say we’re ending 2024 on a high…and we can’t wait to dance our way into an even better 2025 🚀
